SCAREDY CATS… OH MY!

Lets talk about how to calm down our scaredy cats :)

Locations-

First try to figure out where the cat likes to hang out. There is where you want to START the calming and bonding actions that so your cat starts off as comfortable as possible and learns that human attention is something she MAY want to open up to!

Ways to touch your “scared” cat- they may be scared due to abuse ( before you rescued them)or maybe no contact with people in their lives.

  • Use your VOICE to pet them. just use a soothing warm gentle voice or even sing to them or hum. You do not need to get close to the cat.
  • Use a LONG handled soft bristle brush to reach out to stroke them this can remind them of their mothers rough tongue and help soothe them too! Brush UNDER the chin and cheeks and on the shoulders and chest. Always go in the direction of the hair.
  • Touch sessions should last UNDER 5 minutes. Try very small increments to start with and work up to where your cat is enjoying this :)

Expectations-

Don’t expect purring right away. This will take time.

You do not need to try to fix the cats phobia of people—- just learn ways to make them more comfortable :)

Have a puuuurrrrrfect day :)

How to introduce a dog and a new cat

Dogs and cats have one special thing in common.. their noses! They love to investigate their world thru their sense of smell. So today we will talk about how to prepare the meeting BEFORE we put the animals together.

What you need:

Tube socks

your hand

baby gates

Use the baby gates to keep the dog and cat separate until they are ready to meet. or keep the cat in a separate room with a  closed door.

Take a tube sock and place your hand in it. Then rub it all over the cats face especially the cheeks and around the mouth. Do the same for the dog and his face with a DIFFERENT sock.

Then take the DOG SOCK and place it somewhere the cat likes ( maybe under the food bowl) on the window perch…..

Take the CAT SOCK and put it under the dog food bowl, or in his bed……

Note the reactions. If the cat wants no part of the sock he will not want  any part of the dog either. If the cat is lashing its tail as it smells the sock then you need to keep putting DOG SOCKS in his area until he calms down enough to meet the dog. If the dog is barking or whining over the cat socks then you need to keep putting freshly scented CAT SOCKS in his area until he calms down too. They can meet once they are adjusted to the scented socks. This can be quick or can take weeks.

Leash Aggression

Leash aggression and the reasons for it:

  1. Fear – Due to a lack of early socialization and/or  a personality component.  It can also be due to a bad encounter with another dog.
  2. Frustration-can cause arousal  and excitement.  Then, when the arousal is unfulfilled and stopped by a tight leash on a neck or head collar, it makes the frustration go from wanting to play to being down right mad.
  3. Keep in mind that when a dog is pulling to get to another dog that there is a lot of pressure on his trachea which can cause pain. He may then associate the pain in his neck to SEEING other dogs! Therefore he blames dogs that he is trying to get to  as the reason for his pain!

The plan-

Desensitization and counter-conditioning

Equipment needed:  Dogs have what is called an oppositional reflex – so when you pull tightly on a neck collar they will actually want to PULL harder and will in fact get MORE aroused. Lets change the dogs headgear first!

  1. Front-clip harnesses such as the  Easy Walk Harness, the Sensation, and The two clip harness the  Freedom Harness are the tools to choose.  This takes the oppositional reflex out of the problem.  Head-halters can add to a dog’s frustration and are not good for physically moving a dog if we get stuck, so we prefer the harness

We need to change how the dog  feels about the approach of another dog and change the default (conditioned) behavior  when they approach.  This means that we take a primary reinforcer (treats) and we pair them up with the appearance of the other dog .It has to be a primary reinforcer of Super High Value because the THING that has the higher reward will get the behavior we want.  In other words the primary reinforcer needs to more valuable than the appearance of another dog..

  1. Desensitize/counter-condition for every dog. This  needs to be done for each and every dog you see because we don’t know which one will set him off and if we aren’t proactively working our program on each and every dog the dog could have an outburst which would be self-reinforcing and the reactivity would continue.  Another reason this needs to be done for each and every dog is because although our dog may not be having an outburst he may still be cranking himself up inside.
  2. Stay sub-threshold.  Your timing has to catch him BEFORE he explodes..  This means that he is not over-the-top reacting and can actually focus on the treats.
  3. Distance is critical. You may not think your dog has spotted the other dog because he is not over-the-top, but canine senses are so acute that if you see the dog you can be certain that your dog knows full well there is another dog nearby. So always work at a greater distance where your dog  is sub-threshold then slowly close up the distance over time.
  4. Repetition – this is what breaks most humans down. Remember,  dogs don’t generalize the same way humans do.  It does take a while for new pathways to be really well-formed in the brain.  Also, please remember that we are also asking him to learn a new behavior in the face of his old trigger – the other dog – so this can take a lot of repetitions.
  5. Have an escape plan. This means that if your dog is reacting you would move him a bit away from the other dog using some tension on the harness, then take a handful of those high value treats and  rest them for a moment right on his nose so he can smell them, and then gently toss the snacks from his nose into the opposite direction of the trigger dog.

Puppy head gear?

There are so many choices out there for puppy collars! What should you get???

STAY AWAY from PINCH collars, and Choke Chains.

On small dogs I like to use a harness ( due to the regular collars placing too much force on their trachea)

On medium  and large dogs I like martingale collars and head collars known as Haltis.

Martingale

On large dogs I like the Freedom No Pull Harness. You can find all these “head pieces” by clicking Dog Collars
