AGGRESSION can begin to develop…..

Between 9-12 months is when you may see signs of aggression in a puppy. This is due to the beginning of sexual maturity, along with the hormones. There is another phase you may see aggression come out again. During the 18 month ( late adolescence) you may notice more assertion, independence, and aggression.By two years of age most dogs will have shown their full extent of whatever aggression they have in them. You want to get help from a professional CERTIFIED trainer if you have concerns. you can have a darling puppy but then end up with a tragedy on your hands.ALL breeds and ALL sizes can show signs of aggression.Growling can escalate to snapping and biting. Consider joining a canine body language class that Aunt Penny offers so you can be educated about the signs dogs show us.Weds…. lets talk about cats!

Afraid your puppy may run away?

I am worried that my puppy may run off someday what can I do?

Aunt Penny says… Pay attention to whether the puppy is acting differently, whether she seems oblivious to you and ready to run.If you feel she is getting newly emboldened put her on a long line until she settles back down again, even if its a few days to a couple of weeks.Do not let your puppy take charge of the situation and run the risk of her having such a great time that she thinks twice about obeying you in the future.
Tomorrow- learn when aggression can start.

Puppies- Instinct to run off

During the 4-8 month age most puppies develop the urge to take off from you. They want to explore and become “deaf” and “blind” to your calls to return. This happens to even the best trained puppies! This “phase” can last a few days or a month. It’s just a normal part of growing up and an important part of canine development. The problem is if the pup has a great time while she runs freely that memory will be with her for  a long time and may influence her readiness to respond to your calls in the future. What can you do?  Find out on Monday March 5th…….

SCAREDY CATS… OH MY!

Lets talk about how to calm down our scaredy cats :)

Locations-

First try to figure out where the cat likes to hang out. There is where you want to START the calming and bonding actions that so your cat starts off as comfortable as possible and learns that human attention is something she MAY want to open up to!

Ways to touch your “scared” cat- they may be scared due to abuse ( before you rescued them)or maybe no contact with people in their lives.

  • Use your VOICE to pet them. just use a soothing warm gentle voice or even sing to them or hum. You do not need to get close to the cat.
  • Use a LONG handled soft bristle brush to reach out to stroke them this can remind them of their mothers rough tongue and help soothe them too! Brush UNDER the chin and cheeks and on the shoulders and chest. Always go in the direction of the hair.
  • Touch sessions should last UNDER 5 minutes. Try very small increments to start with and work up to where your cat is enjoying this :)

Expectations-

Don’t expect purring right away. This will take time.

You do not need to try to fix the cats phobia of people—- just learn ways to make them more comfortable :)

Have a puuuurrrrrfect day :)

How to introduce a dog and a new cat

Dogs and cats have one special thing in common.. their noses! They love to investigate their world thru their sense of smell. So today we will talk about how to prepare the meeting BEFORE we put the animals together.

What you need:

Tube socks

your hand

baby gates

Use the baby gates to keep the dog and cat separate until they are ready to meet. or keep the cat in a separate room with a  closed door.

Take a tube sock and place your hand in it. Then rub it all over the cats face especially the cheeks and around the mouth. Do the same for the dog and his face with a DIFFERENT sock.

Then take the DOG SOCK and place it somewhere the cat likes ( maybe under the food bowl) on the window perch…..

Take the CAT SOCK and put it under the dog food bowl, or in his bed……

Note the reactions. If the cat wants no part of the sock he will not want  any part of the dog either. If the cat is lashing its tail as it smells the sock then you need to keep putting DOG SOCKS in his area until he calms down enough to meet the dog. If the dog is barking or whining over the cat socks then you need to keep putting freshly scented CAT SOCKS in his area until he calms down too. They can meet once they are adjusted to the scented socks. This can be quick or can take weeks.
